[PG-13] Caught in Between (16/25)
Title: Caught in Between
Characters: Kyuhyun/Taeyeon/Eunhyuk, Donghae/Jessica, Sungmin/Sunny, Siwon/Tiffany
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Romance, Friendship, Comedy, Drama
Eunhyuk opened the door and was surprised when he saw Taeyeon standing on his porch. “Hey,” he said, motioning for her to come in. “I didn’t know you were coming over. Sungmin and the boys are here.” He closed the door. When she didn’t say anything and merely stared at him, he said, “Are you alright?”
“Not really,” Taeyeon honestly answered.
“What’s wrong?” Eunhyuk asked, glancing upstairs, where Sungmin was watching them.
“A lot of things are wrong,” Taeyeon went on.
“Like what?” Eunhyuk asked in concern, putting his hands on her shoulders.
“When were you planning to tell me that Kyuhyun was your friend and that he was the reason why you and Sooyoung broke up?” Taeyeon blasted out at him.
Eunhyuk dropped his hands to his side and gaped at her. “He told you,” he whispered.
“Yes, he told me,” she said. “He told me something that you, being my best friend, should have told me.”
Eunhyuk glanced upstairs and saw that Sungmin was gone. He looked at Taeyeon. “I… I don’t know what to say, except I’m sorry,” he babbled.
Taeyeon looked away and shook her head. “You made me look like a fool,” she said through gritted teeth. “Here I was, trying figure out a way to introduce you guys together, but apparently you already know each other!” A movement behind her made her turn around.
“Taeyeon,” Sungmin said cautiously.
“You knew as well, didn’t you?” Taeyeon accused him.
“I…” Sungmin sighed in resignation. “I did. But I didn’t say anything because it wasn’t my place to tell. I’m sorry, Taeyeon. I really am.”
“At least now you understand why I’m so mad at him,” Eunhyuk suddenly explained.
Taeyeon turned to him. “I do,” she said, her expression softening. “But there’s still no excuse for you lying to me.” She glanced at Sungmin as well. “I don’t think I could ever forgive you two for this.” She moved towards the door.
Eunhyuk stopped her, grabbing her hand. “Taeyeon, please listen. We really didn’t mean to keep it a secret. We didn’t want you to get hurt.”
“You hurt me a lot by keeping it from me,” Taeyeon shot back, untangling her hand from his grasp and walking out of the house.
Eunhyuk looked at Sungmin as Taeyeon slammed the door behind her.
“I should call Sunny,” Sungmin said worriedly.
“What’s wrong?” Hankyung asked Sooyoung when she moved away when he tried to kiss her.
“I’m not in the mood,” Sooyoung told him, flipping through the channels on the television.
“Since when are you not in the mood?” Hankyung snorted.
Sooyoung glared at him. “Since now.”
“Really,” he teased.
“I’m not your girlfriend, you know,” she reminded him. “I can say no.”
“But the reason I’m with you is because you don’t say no,” he retorted.
She turned off the television with an irritated sigh and stood up to look over the clothes in her closet, wondering what she should wear for school after the weekend.
“Look, I came over because you wanted me to,” he said. “I left Jessica crying again.”
“I asked you if you wanted to come and you said yes,” she said, facing him. “This thing that’s happening between us is because of mutual consent.”
He sighed. “Right. Frankly, I’m getting tired of it.”
She narrowed her eyes at him. “What do you mean? You’re not asking me to be your girlfriend, are you?”
“Far from it,” he said, smirking. “I want to end this.”
Sooyoung stared at him in surprise. “I beg your pardon?”
“I want to end this,” Hankyung repeated, looking at her. “I really hate what I’m doing to Jessica. I do love her.”
“If you did then you wouldn’t have started this in the first place,” Sooyoung pointed out, a hand on her hip.
“I know,” Hankyung agreed. “That’s my mistake.” He stood up and walked over to her. “I suppose this is good bye.”
“Don’t be so dramatic,” Sooyoung said, rolling her eyes. “Just go.”
Hankyung sighed, grabbed his jacket and left. Sooyoung sat on the edge of her bed. Now she had no one.
“Stop moping,” Tiffany ordered Jessica, who had her head buried in her arms. They were at Tiffany’s house, where Jessica decided to go after Hankyung ditched her again.
Jessica merely sniffed in response. She was really fed up with waiting for him to have time with her. She hated that he made her feel like she was just something he could have whenever he wanted and discard when he didn’t need. After all the time that they’d been together, she’s starting to seriously consider if she wanted to be with him. She knew for certain now that Hankyung was keeping something from her. She wasn’t sure she wanted to find out anymore. She just didn’t care.
“Sica,” Tiffany repeated, sighing quietly. She hated seeing her friend this way. But no one could stand up to Hankyung. He was too scary that way.
Jessica lifted her head up and looked at her. “Please don’t say that everything’s going to be okay because everything’s not going to be okay,” she responded.
“Okay, I won’t,” Tiffany complied. “I just hope you stop crying. I can’t stand it.”
“I’m stopping,” Jessica gave in, standing up. “I’ll go wash up.” She went to the living room washroom to freshen herself up. Tiffany was right. She should stop crying. Hankyung wasn’t worth the tears anymore. She didn’t want to waste any more energy on him. Maybe it was time to consider breaking up with him. She shuddered. It was such a scary thought. She did love him, after all.
Coming back to the pool area, she thought she heard Tiffany talking to someone. When she went out, she took a step back, looking astonished.
“Look who decided to come by,” Tiffany said, smiling at her.
“Hey,” Donghae greeted, smiling uncertainly.
“What are you doing here?” Jessica asked, glancing at Tiffany, who mouthed BECAUSE OF YOU.
“I, uh,” Donghae stammered. “How are you?”
“I’m fine, I guess,” Jessica said.
“Why don’t you two have a seat?” Tiffany said, pushing Donghae to sit down. Jessica opened her mouth to protest, but Tiffany dragged her to sit down as well. “I’ll just get some snacks.”
Jessica glared at Tiffany’s retreating back. Since when did she become so pushy? She turned her attention back to Donghae, who was staring at the table. “So…” she began. “Tiffany called you over, didn’t she?”
He chuckled in confirmation. “She mentioned that you were crying,” he said, looking seriously at her. “Did you have another fight?” She sighed. “Why do you put up with it, Jessica? You know you deserve better.”
She sighed. “I have been thinking about breaking up with him,” she quietly voiced out. Saying it made her voice shake.
“Thinking about it won’t make things better,” he reminded her.
She glared at him. “I thought Tiffany called you to come so you could cheer me up. This isn’t making me cheerful at all.”
Donghae smiled. He loved it when she went straight to the point. Unlike other girls who beat around the bush. “You’re right,” he said. “I’m sorry.”
Jessica’s expression softened and sighed. “Let’s just talk about something else,” she insisted gently.
“Okay,” he agreed. “Let’s talk about the fact that the doorbell’s going to ring in 3, 2, 1…”
The doorbell echoed around the house. Tiffany left the kitchen and opened the front door.
“Hey,” Tiffany asked, sounding breathless in surprise.
“Hi,” Siwon said, shifting his weight from one foot to another. It had been a while since they saw each other.
“What are you doing here?” she wanted to know, smiling. It was so good to see him. Maybe he was finally going to stop avoiding her.
“I just… I wanted to visit to, uh, see you,” he mumbled.
“Come in,” she said, motioning for him to go inside the house. “I was just in the kitchen, preparing snacks for Donghae and Sica.”
“Right,” he said. “How is Jessica?” He followed her to the kitchen.
“Not good,” she shared, shaking her head. “Hankyung’s going to find himself single if he keeps on doing this to her.”
“Maybe she deserves better,” he suggested.
“Maybe,” she agreed. “So… how have you been?” she casually asked. “I haven’t been seeing you around.”
“Uh yeah,” he uneasily replied. “Sorry about that. I’ve been busy.”
“I understand,” she said.
“There are just so many things. I’m worried about my Science research. I’m not even close to concluding it,” he babbled. “Then there’s this—.”
“It’s okay to say that you don’t like me, Siwon,” Tiffany suddenly said, looking at him, a small but sad smile on her lips.
“What?” Siwon asked, taken aback.
Tiffany shrugged. “I get it. You don’t like me.”
“That’s really not what I’m saying,” Siwon replied.
“You don’t have to explain. I totally get it,” she said, smiling more.
“Tiffany,” he began.
“We should bring this out,” she interrupted him, carrying the tray of snacks.
Siwon frowned and followed Tiffany out onto the pool veranda, where Donghae and Jessica were laughing about something. Tiffany placed the tray on the table.
“Hey!” Donghae greeted, standing up and shaking hands with Siwon.
“What are you doing here?” Jessica asked Siwon innocently.
“He just wanted to drop by because Donghae’s here,” Tiffany answered for him with a straight face.
Jessica glanced at Tiffany then at Siwon then at Donghae, who shrugged, puzzled. The doorbell rang again.
“I’d better get that,” Tiffany said, leaving them.
“What happened?” Jessica demanded from Siwon. “I thought you were here for her.”
“I was—I mean, I am,” Siwon clarified with a shrug.
“What do you mean I can’t come in?” a loud voice was heard from the hall, followed by approaching footsteps then another much faster one, probably Tiffany’s.
“Uh oh,” Jessica said, standing up, watching the veranda doors.
“What?” Donghae asked, looking at her.
Hankyung walked out, followed by an apologetic Tiffany. She worriedly looked at Jessica and mouthed an apology to which Jessica dismissed. This wasn’t her fault.
“Am I interrupting something?” Hankyung demanded, moving closer to them. He glowered at Donghae and Siwon.
“What are you doing here?” Jessica shot back.
“What am I doing here? What are they doing here?” Hankyung retorted, smirking.
“I invited them over,” Tiffany said at once, walking to Jessica’s side. “It just so happened that Jessica also came over.”
“Yeah right,” Hankyung said sarcastically. “I’m not stupid. I know what’s going on here.” He glared at Donghae. “I thought I told you to stay away from Jessica.”
“Stop it, Hankyung,” Jessica said, walking over to him. “I can hangout with whomever I want.”
Hankyung looked at her in disbelief. “Since when do you hangout with geeks?”
“Since you stopped hanging out with me,” Jessica quipped. Before Hankyung could get another word out, she said, “You should go.”
“You’re not coming with me?” Hankyung said, looking truly shocked. “You’re actually staying here with them?”
“Yes,” Jessica firmly said. “I’m busy so I can’t be with you right now.”
Hankyung looked at all of them, specifically at Donghae, then stormed out of the house. Jessica sadly and tiredly watched him go.
Taeyeon entered the house, slamming the door behind her and heading straight for the stairs. Sunny, hearing the door, walked out of the living room.
“Hey, where have you been?” Sunny asked, following her.
“Leave me alone,” Taeyeon said. “I don’t want to talk to you right now.”
“Look, I know what happened,” Sunny began.
Taeyeon stopped going up the stairs and looked down at her. “Of course you know. Everyone knows, except me,” she snapped.
Sunny bit her lip. “Taeyeon, I’m really sorry. We wanted to tell you.”
“No, you didn’t,” Taeyeon interjected. “If you did, then you would’ve told me.”
“But you were happy,” Sunny reasoned.
“I’m not happy now,” Taeyeon shot back. “Thanks to all of you!”
“That’s ridiculous!” Sunny replied angrily. “We didn’t tell you not because we wanted to make you look like a fool. We wanted Kyuhyun to be the one to tell you. He’s the one who lied to you. Not us.”
“By not telling me, you lied to me,” Taeyeon told her.
“Will you stop it already?” Sunny said, nearly yelling. “I don’t deserve this from you and neither does Sungmin, especially Eunhyuk. We were all just trying to protect you.”
They were both at the top of the stairs by this time, angrily facing each other.
“It doesn’t matter what you were all trying to do for me,” Taeyeon responded heatedly. “You all kept something from me, something that I especially needed to know. If I had known from the beginning that Kyuhyun was a person who changed girlfriends everyday or that he was the reason for Eunhyuk’s break up with Sooyoung then I would’ve stopped being with him.”
“Would you really?” Sunny challenged. “Would you really end things with the first guy you’ve fallen for?”
“I just did,” Taeyeon told her.
“Taeyeon,” Sunny began, more gently this time.
“You’re my sister,” Taeyeon interrupted, giving her a disappointed look. “I really hate the fact that you’re a part of all of this.” She turned around and entered her room, slamming it behind her.
“What’s going on?” Heechul asked, coming up the stairs, giving Sunny a questioning look.
Two rings, three rings, four rings, five rings, six rings… Kyuhyun ended the call and threw the cordless phone across the room. He sat on the edge of his bed, burying his face in his hands. He knew this was going to happen. He knew that Taeyeon would be upset. But he never thought that she’d actually leave him. He did his best to explain, explain why he didn’t tell her that he was a kingka, that he dated more girls than a guy his age should have, that he used to be friends with Eunhyuk until Sooyoung broke up with him and started dating him instead. He really should have been honest with her at the beginning. That way no one’s feelings would’ve been hurt.
He sighed and stood up, walking to the balcony of his room, hoping to breathe in some fresh air. He needed to clear his head. He needed to think rationally. Turning around, he spotted the cordless phone. He picked it up and dialed a number.
“What’s up?” Jessica asked when she answered.
“I need to talk to you,” Kyuhyun told her. He really didn’t know anyone else he could rant to.
“So talk,” was Jessica’s answer.
“I told her everything,” he said, crouching down at the foot of his bed.
“I’m guessing it didn’t go well.”
“Not exactly.” He stared at the floor.
“Well I really don’t know what you expected, Kyu. Of course she’s going to be upset. You lied to her.”
“But I told her the truth. Doesn’t that count for something?” he argued.
“Of course it does. Deep down, she appreciates the fact that you told her the truth. But knowing that you kept it from her all this time is burying all that. You should give her some time. She isn’t going to forgive you tomorrow. Or the day after that or the next. Even if you keep on calling her.”
He sighed. She knew him too well. “What should I do? I’m going crazy. She broke up with me.”
She didn’t answer at once. “You have to understand. Eunhyuk’s her best friend. She would be loyal to him before anyone else. You hurt her best friend then you hurt her.”
He sighed and whined. “Sica, what do I do? Please tell me.”
“Kyu, just keep yourself busy. With school, gaming, whatever. You’re not going to be able to talk to her any time soon. She needs time.”
There was a loud knock at the door. Kyuhyun looked up. “Listen, I gotta go,” he said and ended the call, putting the phone on the floor. He stood up and opened the door. “What are you doing here? The answer is still no.”
“Hey,” Sooyoung said quietly, looking down. “I’m not here about that. I just… I wanted to talk to someone.”
“Don’t you have Hankyung for that? Oh right. You two don’t do any talking,” Kyuhyun quipped.
“He dumped me,” Sooyoung revealed.
“And that concerns me how…?” Kyuhyun wanted to know.
“I don’t want to be alone,” she said in almost a whisper. “I just… no one else knows about me and Hankyung except for you.”
“Now isn’t really a good time,” he said, shaking his head.
“Please, Kyu,” she said, suddenly hugging him tightly and burying her face on his shoulder. “Please.”
Kyuhyun closed his eyes. He knew what she was trying to do. She was a master at manipulating people and this was another one of her games. He had said no when she blackmailed him to getting back together with her so that she wouldn’t tell Taeyeon the truth.
“Sooyoung,” he reasoned, pulling away from her embrace.
“Kyuhyun, I’m not here about that. I won’t tell Taeyeon anything. I promise,” she persisted.
“I told her the truth,” he shared in a deadpanned tone.
“That’s good,” she said.
“She broke up with me,” he told her.
She weighed her words carefully. “I guess I’m not the only one who shouldn’t be alone right now.”
Kyuhyun watched as Sooyoung’s face came closer and closer to his until their lips touched. Closing his eyes, he couldn’t help but give in.
