[PG-13] Wishing on Airplanes (26/28)
Title: Wishing on Airplanes
Characters: Donghae, Kyuhyun, Hyukjae, OC, Super Junior
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Romance, Friendship, Comedy, Drama
It was 4:00 in the afternoon and, right on schedule, she promptly arrived. She took same place she usually did, near the top, behind all the other girls who were always there as well. She sat down, put her bag on the ground and took out a book or a notebook and started doing homework. Then, just as the whistle is blown, she would put them away, prop her elbow on her knee and rest her chin on the palm of her hand.
He watched, underneath the cap that he had on, as the wind blew her hair on her face so that she had to fix them and tuck them behind her ears. The simplicity of her movements, the daintiness of her features, her beauty, it never failed to take his breath away. And so he wondered. How long he could do what he was doing?
“You look like a stalker,” a voice beside him muttered quietly making him jump.
He cleared his throat embarrassedly and raised a hand, slapping the visitor behind the head.
“OW!” Hyukjae exclaimed loudly. “That hurt!” He rubbed the back of his head for a bit before returning the same favor to Donghae, skewing his cap.
Donghae merely made a face at him, fixing his cap and turning his attention back to Jooyeon, who was now talking to Tiffany, who had seemingly just arrived with Kangin in tow.
“You shouldn’t have said those things to her,” Hyukjae continued, his eyes trained on the soccer team members warming up. “It wasn’t necessary. It’s very clear, with how you avoid her, how you feel about her.”
“You can’t exactly blame me,” Donghae muttered, looking at his friend for the first time since he arrived.
“Yes, I can,” Hyukjae stoutly stated. He crossed his arms on his chest and studied his friend. He’d known Donghae for a really long time and he knew very well why he did the things he had done. “You made her cry, Hae,” he let him know. When his friend looked at him, clearly surprised, he went on, “Yes, she cried. It took me two days to get what happened out of her. You really didn’t have to say the things you did.”
“Hyukjae,” Donghae began to explain.
“When you think about it, I should pummel you for everything that you did,” Hyukjae interrupted him. “This is not how you promised you would take care of her. I… you know what she means to me. You know how I feel about—.” He stopped himself, feeling embarrassed about what he was going to say, which was something he never really said aloud. He was sure that none of the others knew about this. He had spoken of it to Donghae, but in very vague terms, which he knew he understood.
“I’m sorry,” Donghae replied regretfully. Everyday he felt regret for his shallow-mindedness and stupidity. How could he have ever believed that she wanted to be with Jungsoo in that way when it was so very clear to everyone that she was afraid of him? He had been blinded with jealousy, which was something he could have done something about if only he had moved a bit faster.
Donghae let out a breath and shook his head apologetically. He looked up at the stands to search for Jooyeon. When he did, he found her looking at him. She gave him a small, tentative smile then she turned to the man seated beside her.
Kyuhyun.
It now didn’t matter whether Hyukjae had let go of his feelings for Jooyeon for his sake. He was too late. She was with Kyuhyun now. But after all the things he had told her, he wasn’t surprised.
“What’s going on?” Donghae asked, surprised at seeing her so suddenly. He frowned at Heechul’s retreating back then turned to Jooyeon, who looked as surprised as he did.
“I…” Jooyeon stammered. “We were just—how are you?”
“I’m… good,” he responded, feeling confused. Quite some time had passed since the last time they had talked. He wasn’t sure how to interact with her anymore, not especially after what he had done. Remembering this, he stiffened. “Now isn’t actually a very good time. I have to go.”
He had taken a couple of steps away from her when she called him back.
“Oppa, I’m sorry,” she said.
This confused him even more. Turning back, he looked at her. “What are you sorry for?”
“I’m sorry that you’re being like this towards me,” she told him. “I’m sorry that you’re ignoring me now because of what I did, because of my past catching up to me. I’m just sorry… for everything.”
“Well you should stop being sorry for everything,” he retorted. “Not everything’s your fault.” He turned to go.
“Then why does it feel like it is? When you’re avoiding me like this…” she asked, stopping him from walking away. Slowly, he turned around to face her again. “You didn’t do anything wrong. Anyone in your position would’ve have thought the same and would’ve done the same thing.”
“Oh really?” he snapped. “Do you see Hyukjae or Heechul hyung walking in on you and leaving you like that? Or what about Kyuhyun?” He sneered. “I didn’t think so. Don’t lie to me.”
“Oppa,” she started, taken aback at his tone of voice. “I didn’t mean it like that—.”
“Don’t patronize me,” he countered rather harshly. He moved towards her so fast that she didn’t have the chance to react. “Everyday after that day, I think about what I had done. I had pushed you away. I ignored your pleas for help. I practically gave him consent to r—r—It was like I didn’t care about you!” He clenched both of his fists so hard that his knuckles were white.
“But we know that’s not true!” she cried, reaching out to grab his arm but he pushed her hand away.
“Don’t. It’s true,” he confirmed, shocking her. “If I had cared about you as much as I thought I did, as much as you think I do, I wouldn’t have done what I did.”
“Why are you doing this?” she asked, her eyes watering.
“You’re better off with Kyuhyun,” he finished. “He really cares about you. I can tell. He has never been that way with any other girl before.”
“Oppa,” she chided him, fighting hard not to cry. “You know better than that.”
“I don’t,” he countered, shaking his head. “Right now, I don’t really know if I do.”
Hyukjae patted Donghae’s arm. “I’ll see you after your practice,” he said, turning to walk away.
“Hyukjae,” Donghae called after him. He wasn’t really sure what he wanted to tell his best friend. Probably a big apology or a thank you even, but he never got to say it because Hyukjae gave him an assuring smile.
“Don’t worry. You’re not getting away with it,” Hyukjae assured him. “You have a month to make it up to me in terms of free lunches.” He laughed along with Donghae. “And strawberry milk,” he added as an afterthought. The laughter disappeared and he gave his best friend a thoughtful look. “You can apologize to her and make it up to her,” he advised. “Not to me. She needs it more than I do.” Without another word, he walked away.

“So let me get this straight,” Tiffany stated. “You and Kyuhyun are together?”
Tiffany and Taeyeon had cornered Jooyeon during lunch break as she was on her way to the cafeteria with Kyuhyun. Without much of an explanation, they just grabbed her from him and brought her to the quad so that they could talk without anyone interrupting.
“No,” Jooyeon answered honestly, shaking her head and raising her hands to prove her point. “We’re not together.”
“So all the kissing…?” Taeyeon pressed, raising her eyebrows at her best friend. “That’s just… something you guys normally do?”
“No,” Jooyeon stammered. “I mean, we do, but I—.” She sighed in defeat. “I don’t know if we’re together. It just happened.” When Kyuhyun had kissed her, she didn’t push him away. She couldn’t. She had insisted to repay him in the way he wanted and needed. This was what he wanted and needed.
“Do you like Kyuhyun?” Tiffany asked in a very straightforward manner.
“Of course I like him,” Jooyeon said at once. She would be lying if she said she didn’t. Kyuhyun was a lot of girls’ ideal and she could see why. He was handsome, charming and funny when he wanted to be. But, more than that, he was always there and he made you feel that he was around, that he was there for you. “Can we not talk about this right now?” she pleaded, gesturing to the notes splayed in front of her. “I need to finish this.”
Taeyeon and Tiffany exchanged a look, both deciding to just let it go. It was obvious that it wasn’t the right time to interrogate her about her relationship with Kyuhyun.
But it was something that baffled them all. It was no secret that Kyuhyun had feelings for Jooyeon. They all saw how he changed right before their eyes when Jooyeon arrived, saw how he had grown to care for her more than he usually did with other girls. But Jooyeon, they never saw her give any preferential treatment to him. They were mostly betting on her going out with either Hyukjae or Donghae. But now that they thought about it, they didn’t know why they hadn’t thought about Jooyeon ever going out with Kyuhyun. They had grown so close.
The three girls had lapsed into a silence with Jooyeon doing some schoolwork and Taeyeon and Tiffany making faces at each other.
Suddenly, Jooyeon put her pen down with a bit of a slam on the table. The two other girls looked at her, startled.
“Does everyone think we’re together?” Jooyeon asked straightforwardly.
Tiffany gave her a sheepish but hesitant smile. “Well you guys are always together and well…” She glanced at Taeyeon.
“It’s the kissing,” Taeyeon supplied.
Jooyeon bit her lip and played with her pen, staring at the tabletop. She liked Kyuhyun. She really did. He made her feel better about things and about herself. He was there when she felt like she couldn’t turn to anyone, not even her best friend. But that was where her feelings for him ended. She liked him.
Sighing, she looked up and saw Donghae walking out of the building, entering the quad, with Hyukjae, Kangin and Siwon in tow. Her eyes stung with tears as she thought back to their conversation and the things he had said.
Her friends saw the longing in her eyes. Taeyeon reached across the table and squeezed her hand.
“It’s not fair to Kyuhyun if you know that you don’t feel for him the way you feel for—,” Taeyeon started to say.
“He doesn’t want me,” Jooyeon cut her off, taking her hand back. She suddenly started gathering her things, standing up. “You know what, Kyuhyun is amazing and he takes care of me and he’s not hard to love. So yeah, I am with Kyuhyun.” She grabbed her stuff and turned to leave only to stop as she came face to face with Donghae.
His reaction told her that he heard everything.

“What are we doing here?” Jooyeon asked as Kyuhyun took her hand and pulled her away from their parked car.
Kyuhyun had picked her up from her house, without much warning, only to drive them to the airport. The sun had just set so it made her wonder what they were doing there. As far as she knew, they both didn’t have anyone close to them who was coming home from somewhere.
They walked a little farther away and settled themselves on the edge of the parking lot, where there was a railing and where they could watch the planes take off and land.
“I just thought this is something we could do together,” Kyuhyun answered, putting his arm around her waist. “Wishing on airplanes.” He gave her a smile that didn’t reach his eyes, but he looked away so quickly that she thought she might have imagined it.
“But you hate doing this with me,” she reminded him, an amused smile on her face.
He pulled her towards him, her back resting on his chest. “I never hate doing anything with you,” he muttered so softly that she barely heard it.
She settled herself into his arms and watched as one of the planes got ready for take off. Kyuhyun had always made fun of her fascination for airplanes and making a wish on them so this was quite a surprise for her. But it was a pleasant one. It was nice that he was finally beginning to understand why she liked it so much.
“This is nice,” she commented.
“You wish for many things, don’t you?” he snickered teasingly, feeling pleased at their closed proximity.
“Not really,” she corrected him, shaking her head slightly.
“What is it that you wish for then?” he asked.
“I just want to be happy,” she quietly answered. She sighed and closed her eyes, just wanting to be in the moment. Being at the airport, being in Kyuhyun’s arms, she just wanted to enjoy it and forget everything else.
“What would make you happy then?” he pressed, hugging her tighter.
She slowly turned around in his arms and faced him. “This makes me happy,” she sincerely told him, pressing her lips to his cheek. She wished she could do something for him just to show him how much she appreciated having him in her life. "Thank you."
Kyuhyun looked at Jooyeon and took in all of her beauty, inside and out. Leaning forward, he gave her a kiss, slow and sweet, which was all he could give her because he knew it was all she would take from him. It was in the way she kissed him back every single time.
He just wasn’t her someone.
As another plane took off and Jooyeon told him to wish for something, he closed his eyes, keeping his arms around her, and wished that he could remember this forever and that he could live with what he was about to do.
