[PG-13] Unexpected Song (2/?)

“What did you do today?” my sister asked me as she prepared our dinner: Bibimbap and Japchae. My favorites!

I sat down on one of the kitchen stools and watched her neatly slice a cucumber into neat pieces and placed them into a bowl. “Went to school,” I answered, grabbing a carrot and popping it into my mouth. “I start next week.”

Yes, I’d decided to take some music classes. In Singapore, I studied and received a diploma in Professional Make-up Artistry from Cosmoprof International School of Make-up. It was my first love so, without hesitation, I took the test and got myself a scholarship. Ever since I was a kid, I’d always been fascinated about the paint that people put on their faces. But I had another love. Music. It was what I had to give up when I decided to pursue the study of make-up.

“It’s a good thing Kyung Hee accepts late enrollees,” Hae Won said, mixing the vegetables, rice and other toppings she had put in a bowl.

I shrugged, licking my lips as my tummy growled in hunger. I hadn’t actually thought I would get accepted so easily, but, I suppose, they’d seen my grades. I was in the honor roll for four consecutive years in Cosmoprof, after all. Although that was an entirely different course.

“Can’t believe you want to study again,” Hae Won went on, shaking her head. “You can earn money now. With your excellent make-up skills, you can find a job anywhere.”

“It’s just a couple of classes.” I didn’t actually enroll in a full course. I just decided to take up some classes, which I thought I’d enjoy. “Anyway, I wanted to talk to you about work actually,” I then said, propping my chin on my hand, elbow on the counter. “Do you think you can help me look for a job? I don’t want to leech off of you.”

She rolled her eyes at me. “Like I care. You’ve been away for too long. I haven’t had the chance to baby you.” My sister gave me an affectionate gaze. I knew she missed me the whole time I was away. I missed her, too. We only had each other after all.

“I’m 21. I don’t need to be babied,” I told her in a warning tone. In Singapore, I’d been the youngest in my class so everyone treated me like a little kid. It was sweet, but at the same time I just wanted people to treat me as an equal, as an adult. “So…” I changed the subject. “Do you think you can help me?”

“Sure,” she agreed. “It’ll be no problem. Come with me to work and I’ll introduce you to some people.” She dusted her hands off of all the ingredients and washed her hands.

“Great!” I said, smiling appreciatively at her as she handed me my bowl of Bibimbap.

As I followed Hae Won through the maze of hallways in one of the music shows’ offices, I began to feel overwhelmed at the amount of people everywhere. A lot of people were walking about, most in a hurry. There was a lot of bustling and rushing. The atmosphere was stressful and almost hysterical. I saw some artists that I’d seen on TV by accident, most being idols I vaguely recognize. When Hae Won stopped in front one of the waiting rooms, she turned to me.

“Did you actually do research when I asked you to?” she asked, eyeing me seriously.

The night before, she had insisted that I do some research on Super Junior, which was when I realized that they were the group she was styling for. I couldn’t help but think of Min Young’s good luck, as well as my bad luck. I had nothing against them personally. I just didn’t think about them that much because there was no point and I didn’t want to start now.

Hae Won sighed and shook her head when I gave her a guilty smile. “I did a little,” I immediately said. I did find out that they used to be a 13-member group and were now reduced to 10 because of certain issues. And I finally knew who Donghae was.

Before we entered the room, I started to feel apprehensive for some strange reason so I asked Hae Won to just let me stay outside the room for a bit. So I hung outside, leaning my back on the wall and watched people pass by. Most of them were really nice, probably thinking I worked there, smiling at me and bowing politely.

“You alright?”

I looked up and saw a really handsome—no, really beautiful—guy. He was wearing dark, fitted jeans and a stylishly loose black shirt. His pretty and shiny hair framed his face perfectly. The ideal word to describe him would probably be ‘angel’. It looked like he was about to enter Super Junior’s waiting room but stopped when he saw me. I bowed politely and nodded.

“You kind of look familiar,” he then said, giving me a slight smirk.

“I’m sorry but I don’t think we’ve met before,” I told him uncertainly but as courteously as I could.

An astonished look flitted across his face, but it disappeared quickly. He then abandoned his original plan of going inside the room and stood beside me, leaning his back on the wall as well.

“What’s your name?” he asked straightforwardly.

I hesitated. But there didn’t see to be any harm in telling him my name so I answered. “Hye Rin.”

He smiled. “Pretty name. It suits you.”

He was flirting, I was sure of it, but, to my horror, it worked on me. I actually felt my cheeks burn. I looked away, hoping to hide it. It appeared that he saw my cheeks pink because he chuckled.

He was about to say something when waiting room door opened and a couple of guys, all wearing black, streamed out.

“Oh hyung,” one of them said. He gave me a look then glanced at the angel. “We’ve been wondering where you were.”

“Just been here,” the angel said. Before he went after the others, he smiled at me. “See you around.”

I blushed again to my dismay and nodded respectfully. Seriously, what was wrong with me? I’d never had a boyfriend before but I wasn’t exactly the type of girl to be easily swayed by flirting techniques, especially when it came from good-looking guys. They were surely experienced in making girls drool over them, which is why I hated that I had fallen for the tricks of one.

“Hye Rin-ah,” my sister suddenly said, coming out of the room and grabbing my arm. “Let’s go. They’re performing.”

I followed my sister to the side of the stage, where the members of Super Junior were standing in their respective blockings. There were indeed only 10 of them now. My mind drifted to Min Young. She’d probably die when she realizes that I’d actually seen them in person. I chuckled to myself. I couldn’t wait to tell her. When I looked up, I saw the angel looking at me. He raised an eyebrow at me and smiled.

My mouth hung open.

He was a Super Junior member.
