[PG-13] Wishing on Airplanes (16/28)
Title: Wishing on Airplanes
Characters: Donghae, Kyuhyun, Hyukjae, OC, Super Junior
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Romance, Friendship, Comedy, Drama
Just as slowly as summer had come, it had gone quickly. They were back at school again. Back to work. Donghae watched as Jooyeon studiously did her homework. She was hunched over, really concentrating.
“Hey,” Heechul greeted, sitting down beside Jooyeon and putting an arm around her. Jooyeon immediately stiffened. She shrugged his arm away and stood up. “Ya,” he said, looking offended. “Where are you going?”
“Just…” Jooyeon stammered. “I, uh… library.” Without another word, she gathered her stuff and left.
“Aish, that girl,” Heechul muttered.
Donghae didn’t say anything. Ever since they got back, Jooyeon hadn’t been the same. She had become withdrawn. She was even more reserved now than when she first met them. Every time someone entered her personal space, she folded up, like some plants do when bothered. Even Heechul, whom was she was probably most comfortable with in terms of skinship, couldn’t get close to her anymore. When he asked her for a hug, she merely smiled and said something that would make him laugh instead.
“You know what’s going on, don’t you?” Heechul asked, looking at Donghae closely.
“I wish I did,” Donghae responded with a sigh. “She won’t say anything. Even Hyukjae can’t get a word out from her.”
“Why can’t she tell us?” Heechul complained. “We’re her friends.”
“Maybe that’s why she won’t tell us,” Donghae mused. “Because we’re already her friends.”

“Hey!” Tiffany greeted, appearing beside Jooyeon with a happy jump.
“Fany,” Jooyeon responded, chuckling as she closed her locker. “What’s up?”
“Are you going home already?” Tiffany inquired as they started walking down the hall. The bell had just rung to signal the end of the day’s classes.
“Yeah, I have a ton of homework,” Jooyeon lied. Her routine had resulted to school then home after Eunhye threatened to tell the others about what had happened in her past.
“Liar,” Tiffany muttered, but Jooyeon heard her clearly. “Come with me.” She grabbed her hand and began dragging her down the hall.
When Jooyeon realized that Tiffany was bringing her to the gym, she stopped walking and pulled her hand from her. Tiffany looked at her curiously.
Hesitating, Jooyeon insisted, “I really have to go home.”
“Joo, I don’t know what the problem is, but you can’t avoid them forever,” Tiffany pointed out. She then grabbed her hand again and pulled her into the gym.
Once they walked in and were noticed, Hankyung announced, “Look who decided to visit!”
“Ya! Park Jooyeon!” Kangin yelled, walking over to her and giving her a tight hug. “Where have you been?”
“Oppa, I can’t—,” Jooyeon tried to say, stiffening.
“You’re crushing her,” Shindong said, pushing Kangin away and giving her a hug as well.
Tiffany and Taeyeon watched from the bleachers as the boys fawned over Jooyeon. For some reason, she had stopped coming to their basketball games/practices after school. She never once watched Donghae’s soccer practice either. She just went straight home. During weekends, they rarely saw her. She even declined playing Starcraft with them.
“Oppa, I really have to go,” Jooyeon informed them, trying to disentangle herself from Heechul’s arms.
“Where is it that you have to go to this time?” Hyukjae demanded with a pout.
“Are you seeing someone?” Siwon asked curiously.
When Jooyeon merely smiled, Hankyung gasped. “You are, aren’t you?”
“I am not,” Jooyeon cleared up, chuckling. “I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”
“But of course you won’t,” Hyukjae knowingly said. Based on what’s been happening the past two weeks, Jooyeon would just avoid them and bury herself in books in the library. She was becoming a master of evasion.
Jooyeon smiled. “Bye,” she said, turning to go.
“Can’t you stay?” Donghae asked, speaking for the first time. He missed Jooyeon incredibly, although he would never admit that to anyone. It was weird not seeing her around. It felt like something was always missing.
“I guess I could—,” Jooyeon began, smiling a little.
“Donghae!” a voice echoed through the gym.
It was Mira. She walked in, glowing like a supermodel in her simple jeans and white blouse.
“Mira,” Donghae said, looking surprised she was there. “What are you doing here?”
“Can’t I come to watch?” Mira asked, a teasing glint in her eyes.
Donghae smiled boyishly. “Of course you can.” He turned to Jooyeon, whose smiled had disappeared. “Jooyeon, this is Mira. Mira, this is Jooyeon.”
“Hi again,” Jooyeon nicely said.
“It’s so nice to see you again,” Mira said, surprising Jooyeon. “Donghae always talks about you. I’ve begun to feel jealous.”
“You don’t have to be,” Jooyeon told her. She turned to the others. “I have to go.”
“But I thought you’re staying,” Hyukjae said, pouting.
“I just remembered that I have homework and everything,” Jooyeon covered up. She met Kyuhyun’s eyes. He quirked an eyebrow at her.
“Are you sure?” Mira asked, frowning prettily.
“Sorry,” Jooyeon nicely said, shaking her head. Smiling, she waved goodbye at everyone. She gave an extra big wave towards Taeyeon and Tiffany, who were both frowning.
“I’ll take you home,” Kyuhyun suddenly offered, making everyone look at him. He walked towards the bleachers to get his bag.
“No, it’s fine,” Jooyeon declined.
“Kyuhyun will take you home,” Heechul finalized.
Mira shrugged and walked towards the bleachers, while the other boys said their goodbyes to her. Donghae and Hyukjae lingered.
“Jooyeon, when are you going to stop avoiding us?” Hyukjae demanded softly.
“I’m not avoiding you,” Jooyeon innocently responded.
“Okay,” Hyukjae replied. “When are you going to stop lying about avoiding us?”
“Hyuk,” Donghae said, chiding him jokingly. He turned to her with a small smile. “I have a game this weekend. It’s my first game and I really want you to be there.”
How could she resist when he looked at her like that? “I’ll be there,” she promised.
“Really?” Hyukjae asked, surprised.
“Of course,” she said. “It’s the least I can do after missing watching so many practices.”
“You mean all,” Donghae corrected with a grin.
“Yes, that’s right,” she admitted, chuckling.
“Ready to go?” Kyuhyun asked, his bag hanging from his shoulder.
“Yeah,” she said, nodding. Smiling at the two boys, “Enjoy your practice.”
“Can’t you really stay?” Hyukjae pleaded.
Unknowingly, Hyukjae and Kyuhyun noticed Jooyeon’s eyes travel towards where Mira was sitting prettily. She looked at them and smiled, shaking her head. “I’ll see you tomorrow. At lunch,” she said, making up her mind.
“Promise?” Hyukjae asked.
“Yes,” she assured them.
“Alright then,” Donghae happily said.
“Hey, let’s play!” Heechul called after them. “Jooyeon, leave already! Donghae and Hyukjae can’t concentrate when you’re around!”
Jooyeon giggled and pushed Donghae and Hyukjae away, both grinning like kids.
As they walked towards the parking lot after going to Kyuhyun’s locker, he told Jooyeon, “You really are a bad liar, you know.”
“What?” Jooyeon asked, taken aback at the comment.
“You’re too transparent,” he clarified.
~ * ~
“This is how you’re taking me home?” Jooyeon voiced out incredulously.
She watched as Kyuhyun got a black helmet from a huge, black motorcycle at the motorcycle parking space in the school parking lot. Ignoring her, he set the helmet on her head, strapping it tightly. He smiled when he looked at her.
“Cute,” he murmured. He then got on the motorcycle. When he saw that she wasn’t moving, he sat back and said, “Are you getting on or what?”
“I’m not sure I want to,” she replied uncertainly. Motorcycles were dangerous. Motorcycles screamed accidents. And how come she never knew that Kyuhyun rode one?
“It’s perfectly safe,” he assured her.
“I don’t really…” she started to protest.
“Just get on, Park Jooyeon,” he ordered her sternly.
How could she say no to that? Especially when he said it in that deep voice of his. So she slowly and carefully sat on the seat behind him. He then started the engine, which made such a roaring noise.
“You’re going to fall off,” he said, turning his head to look at her.
“Mmmmwhat?” she asked, looking at him, clueless.
He smirked and shook his head. Without warning, he grabbed her hands and wrapped her arms around his waist, pulling her closer to him. She gasped inaudibly.
Smiling a little, he said, “Let’s go.”

“You alright?” Heechul asked Taeyeon. She’d been staring off into space for the past 10 minutes after she had talked to someone on the phone. “Will you two shut it?” he screeched at Hyukjae and Donghae who were wrestling on the floor.
Hankyung and Shindong, who were watching TV, snickered as the two boys continued on wrestling, noiselessly this time.
Heechul turned to Taeyeon, who didn’t say anything. “Hey,” he said, nudging her.
“What is wrong with you?” Kangin asked Taeyeon. He was flipping through some gaming magazines that Hyukjae had lying around. Tiffany had some errands to run with her mom, hence him not doing anything.
“Nothing,” Taeyeon finally answered, sighing as she stood up, going over to the window.
“Where’s Siwon?” Hyukjae asked, groaning as Donghae twisted his right arm.
When Taeyeon didn’t answer, Heechul stood up and walked over to her. Putting an arm around her, he asked, “Hey, what’s wrong?”
She merely shook her head. “I’m going for a walk,” she said, moving towards the door.
When Taeyeon left, the boys stopped what they were doing and looked at each other. Taeyeon was… well, she was Taeyeon. She’d always been this pretty, cute, smiling girl, who always acted like their mother. She always scolded them when they played too much games and sports, always made sure they ate their meals. She was also the one they leaned on when they got too hung up with a girl. She was their biggest supporter.
Heechul looked out of the window and watched as Taeyeon sat down on one of the benches in the garden. She looked really bothered about something.
~ * ~
“Where are we going?” Jooyeon asked when she finally opened her eyes. Their surroundings definitely didn’t look like the ones on the way home.
“You look like you need to unwind,” Kyuhyun replied, glancing at her.
“Watch the road,” she said, panicked.
They drove around Seoul for the rest of the afternoon. Jooyeon leaned her head on Kyuhyun’s back, feeling relaxed for the first time in days. It was the perfect way to unwind, even if she would never admit it to him. She closed her eyes once more.
When she opened her eyes again, it was because they were slowing down. Finally stopping, she realized that they were at the Han River. Jooyeon got off the bike and removed the helmet. Kyuhyun got it from her and hung it on one of the handlebars.
“Feeling better?” he asked, looking at her sideways.
“Yes,” she confirmed, smiling a little. “But what are we doing here?”
“The sun’s setting,” he said, sitting on one of the empty benches. She sat down beside him.
The sunset was lovely. Jooyeon didn’t think she’d ever seen the sunset so beautiful before. It was like witnessing a miracle. She could almost imagine music playing, just like in the movie City of Angels. She let out a contented sigh.
As the sun finally set, darkness settled over them. They merely sat there in comfortable silence.
“Do you want to go?” Kyuhyun asked, still looking at the river.
“I’d like to stay a bit longer if that’s okay,” Jooyeon gently asserted.
He smiled. “Take all the time that you need.”
“Do you come here often?” she asked after a moment of silence. Han River was even more beautiful during the evening. Bright lights lit up on the bridge and the side of the river, making it more wonderful.
“When I need to sort out my thoughts, I do,” he answered.
“What kind of thoughts?” she curiously inquired, glancing at him.
“You’re asking too many questions again,” he reminded her, giving her an irritated look.
“Sorry,” she said, biting her lip and turning her attention back to the river.
They lapsed into another silence. But it was the nice kind of silence. Somehow, she felt comfortable being with him, just like this, sitting and not talking. When she thought about it, she was always comfortable with him. He really was her dark knight. He just seemed to know when she needed consoling.
“You should let it out, whatever it is,” he suddenly said, cutting into her thoughts.
She looked at him, surprised. “What do you mean?”
“That thing that’s bothering you, you should talk to someone about it,” he clarified. “It’s unhealthy to keep worries to one’s self.” He looked at her. “Don’t deny it. There is something.” She opened her mouth to say something in reply but decided against it. “It can’t be that bad,” he said somewhat soothingly.
Before she could respond, she gasped excitedly and pointed at the sky. She turned to Kyuhyun. “Oppa, make a wish.” She closed her eyes.
“It’s an airplane, Jooyeon,” he dryly said, looking a bit amused.
She opened her eyes and started to retort, but her ringing phone cut her off. Watching the plane pass by, she sighed and answered the call.
