Happy New Year
Tao is a hopeless romantic. He believes in things like fate, soulmates and love at first sight. He thinks these are things that make the world go round because it centers on love and one can never go wrong with love.
Jongdae snorts unattractively, spilling rice all over the tabletop, as Tao recounts these things, eyes dreamy and sparkling with fresh yearning for them. He sobers up when Baekhyun shoves him in a not so gentle manner and, even more so, when Tao shoots him with one of his death glares, one of the minor ones, and zips up his lips in an effort to pacify him.
Tao then carries on with his idealistic tirade, continuing on to how he imagines his first kiss to be.
“It will be by a balcony, underneath the twinkling stars,” Tao giddily shares. “We’d be having champagne because it’s some formal event and we’d be wearing tuxedos and he’d be all handsome and I’ll be in love and pliant and—“
Jongdae snorts again and, this time, water shoots out of his nose. Baekhyun makes a face and shoves Jongdae sprawling to the floor.
“You’re disgusting!” Baekhyun shudders and gets up to wipe Jongdae’s remnants off the table with a clean rag.
“And rude, too,” Tao’s glare is even more menacing than the one earlier and Jongdae actually feels himself cowering.
“I’m sorry!” Jongdae says when he manages to stand up, dusting the back of his jeans. “Just... you talk about kissing like it’s some planned thing, like you believe things will go according to how you imagine it to be.”
“Jongdae, leave him alone,” Baekhyun sternly says as he brings their plates to the kitchen. “Tao can dream about his first kiss however he likes.”
Jongdae rolls his eyes. “This is why he’s like this because you allow him to be,” he argues. He turns to Tao. “If you carry on like this, you’ll be sorely disappointed because, in love, nothing turns out the way it’s supposed to.”
Tao looks at Baekhyun for answers to the questions littering his eyes and Baekhyun sighs. “All Jongdae is saying that maybe you should be a bit less…”
“Impractical? Impossible? Unrealistic? Stupid?” Jongdae lists.
“Yes, thank you, Kim Jongdae Dictionary,” Baekhyun rolls his eyes. He’s turning back to Tao before he looks at Jongdae again. “And stupid means differently, dimwit.”
“It’s practically the same thing,” Jongdae insists.
“I am not being stupid!” Tao pouts, earnestly pleading with Baekhyun to agree with him.
“You’re not,” Baekhyun promises him before shooting Jongdae a glare of his own. “Just… maybe you can tone it down a bit? We just don’t want you getting disappointed and getting hurt.”
Tao sighs, clearly starting to look disappointed. “So I guess I can rule out getting my first kiss as soon as the clock strikes 12 on New Year’s,” he frowns.
Baekhyun opens his mouth to pacify him before an idea forms in his head. He smiles so creepily that Jongdae actually quivers when Baekhyun looks at him.
“Oh, you never know,” Baekhyun says as he pats Tao on the shoulder.
-
“Ohmygod you’re insane!” Jongdae screeches as Baekhyun stuffs him inside their pantry. “What are you doing! Help! HELP! Baekhyun is trying to kill me!!!”
Chanyeol pops his head out to the doorway. “What’s happening?”
“Baekhyun’s trying to—,” Jongdae desperately tries to scream for help but Baekhyun slaps a hand over his mouth.
Baekhyun smiles sweetly at Chanyeol, whose eyebrows have ridden too high up his forehead. “Everything’s fine here, Chanyeol, I promise,” he amiably insists. “I’ll see you in our room later.” He wiggles his own eyebrows up and down just to make sure he gets his message across. Chanyeol blushes a dark red and disappears.
Baekhyun sharply turns to Jongdae, who’s turning green, and shoves him inside the pantry, closing the door behind them. Baekhyun removes his hand from Jongdae’s mouth when he’s sure that he’s not going to scream and fumbles for the light switch. When they’re bathed in light, Baekhyun narrows his eyes at him.
“It’s just a kiss,” Baekhyun repeats for the nth time.
Jongdae shakes his head. “No. No,” he persists. “It’s not just a kiss. This is Tao we’re talking about. He dreams about rainbows and unicorns and the toothfairy. I’m not going to shatter his dream of the perfect first kiss and have him wushu me to the ends of the earth thankyouverymuch.” He pauses for a bit then smiles. “You’re welcome to, though.”
“And have Chanyeol wushu me to the ends of the earth instead? No thanks,” Baekhyun snaps.
“But Chanyeol doesn’t know wushu so—.” Jongdae snaps his mouth shut when Baekhyun sneers at him.
“Listen, there’s got to be a reason why Tao talks about these romantic notions with you,” Baekhyun gently starts again.
Jongdae rolls his eyes. “If there’s a perfectly good reason for all the things Tao says or does, we’d all be—.” He clears his throat when Baekhyun demands he shut up with one look. “I’m just saying. That is just how Tao is. We’ve all learned how to deal with it. He’s romantic, that’s it. Just… I don’t want to be the one to force him to come down from cloud nine.”
“You do it all the time, though,” Baekhyun reminds him. Jongdae makes a face at him and Baekhyun sighs in compliance. “Fine.” He opens the door and makes a move to step out. Then he glances at his watch and says, “Oh, look at the time.”
“What—.”
Baekhyun then shoves Jongdae back into the pantry and locks it.
-
Tao opens the pantry door and stumbles back when he finds Jongdae seated on the floor, head on his arms. He frowns and glances around before he crouches down in front of him. There’s flour on his hyung’s head. He gently brushes it off.
“Ge, what are you doing here?” Tao asks, confused.
Jongdae lifts his head up. His eyes widen because the door is open. But before he can even move his lips to get a word out, Baekhyun speeds by, winking as shuts the pantry door, lock clicking into place.
Tao stands up and tries jiggling the doorknob open. “Hey! Hey!” He pounds on the door but no one comes to open it.
“It’s hopeless,” Jongdae tells him. “Baekhyun is the root of all evil.”
Tao turns to him. “Meaning Baekhyun ge is the root of Lu Han ge?” He wrinkles his nose at the idea.
Jongdae bursts into laughter, the flour on his hair spreading down to his shirt. He pats the space next to him. “Come sit with me,” he asks. “I suppose Lu Han is all evil.”
“He really is,” Tao eagerly responds as he takes a seat beside him. “Just this morning he was telling me that my plans are never going to come through because—“ He cuts himself off and bites his lip.
“I’m sorry for saying all those things about love to you. I didn’t mean to be rude or spiteful,” Jongdae sighs, patting Tao’s knee. “But, just so you know, things may not always go according to plan in love, but the unplanned things are usually the most memorable ones.” He winks and Tao blushes.
“What would you think would constitute as an unplanned thing, ge?” Tao asks curiously, cheeks still pink.
Jongdae looks around them and sees all the flour and batter and pancake mixes all around them, coupled with packs and packs of ramyun and jajangmyun, as well as some canned goods.
“I suppose if you get your first kiss in a pantry instead of the balcony like you’d hoped,” Jongdae muses thoughtfully. There’s a pause before his eyes widen at the realization of what he just said. “Of course that’s just one of those weird ideas,” he coughs.
Tao fidgets and plays with the hem of his shirt. “I don’t think it’s weird,” he mumbles. Jongdae’s eyes widen even more as he turns to look at him and Tao flushes even more. “Uh, I mean, you know, if it’s with someone you actually want to kiss, it wouldn’t matter where it is, right?”
“Er, I suppose so,” Jongdae slowly responds, not entirely sure what they were talking about anymore. “But you don’t really want your first kiss to be in a pantry, don’t you—“
Jongdae’s words are cut off because Tao’s mouth is suddenly on his. Tao’s lips are on his. Their magnae’s lips are on his. Tao is kissing him. It takes a couple more seconds before this single thought settles into his brain before it shakes him to react and kiss him back.
When Tao pulls away, lips red and wet, he gives Jongdae a look that can only be described as being very afraid. It’s a look that Jongdae has never seen on him because, well, with his size and wushu martial arts skills, he’s sure that Tao is rarely afraid of anything. But he’s afraid of Jongdae now, and what he could possibly say.
“Ge, I’m…” Tao clears his throat. His face is a dark red and Jongdae has the sudden urge to kiss him again. Tao then groans as the embarrassment creeps up on him. He proceeds to bury his face in his hands because he’d just single-handedly blown his cover and exposed his feelings to the person he’s so afraid to share it with. “I’m sorry,” he mumbles through his arms.
Jongdae is suddenly unsure how to proceed because he’s never been in such a situation before, where he’s stuck in a pantry of food with his bandmate, who just happens to be the one he’s been imagining in all his romantic dreams. It’s not that he isn’t flattered or doesn’t like the idea. It’s just that he’s incredibly baffled about how dense he actually is. And not about Tao’s feelings, too. But about his own.
There are now sniffles coming from Tao, the unmistakable sign that the magnae is crying. Yet again. Jongdae reaches out and puts an arm around him, rubbing his hand gently up and down his back.
“Hey, why are you crying?” Jongdae soothingly and worriedly asks.
“Because,” Tao hiccups as he finally lifts his face to look at him, “because I kissed you. And…and…”
“Hey,” Jongdae soothes him, reaching up to brush strands of his hair away from his eyes. “Why should you be sorry that you kissed me?” He gives him a smile. “What if I liked it, too?”
Tao’s glassy eyes widen. “You did? But, ge, you—“
Jongdae waves his hands dismissively. “I know, I know, I’m against romantic notions and all that,” he says. “But, well,” he shifts, suddenly uncomfortable, “if it’s you…” Red colors his cheeks and he clears his throat, looking away.
Tao hesitates for a second and then he’s leaning towards Jongdae again, eyes purposeful and determined. The ends of Jongdae’s lips lift up to a smile before he pushes himself forward, meeting him halfway.
Jongdae thinks second kisses are better than first ones. Because this time Tao’s large, calloused hand is caressing the small of his back, making him lean even more into the kiss, making him tremble and heady. He grips Tao’s sides, wrinkling his shirt in the process.
When they pull away to take a breath, Jongdae leans his forehead against Tao’s. He smiles because Tao is smiling at him, tears far and gone.
“Do you think Baekhyun ge will finally let us out?” Tao asks him, pulling back.
“Will you wushu him to the ends of the earth for me?” Jongdae sweetly asks, eyelashes fluttering.
“I’d be glad to,” Tao chuckles, pressing a kiss to his cheek.
They wait for a couple of minutes in silence, but no one opens the pantry door.
“Hey Tao?” Jongdae whispers, his head on Tao’s shoulder. Tao grunts in response, threading their hands together. “Happy New Year.”

I am so with you on that Tao! Well, I'll be a wearing a dress and it won't be my first kiss since my first kiss happened in the school yard of my old elementary school under the work of peer pressure. To this day, I still regret it. T_T
“But, just so you know, things may not always go according to plan in love, but the unplanned things are usually the most memorable ones.”
That is so, so, so true! I have witnessed several love related events that I will never forget — some good, some bad — and they were all pretty much unplanned. Just a spur of the moment kind of thing.
And when Tao kisses Jongdae in the pantry right after he says that, I melted into a puddle of goo and glitter and rainbows and candy and all that is cute. Ah, I just really like Chen/Tao and fluff, so an awesome fic + Chen/Tao + fluff = me giggling and cooing at my laptop screen at 12 in the morning. :P
Okay, so I just really needed to let my feelings out. I hope you don't mind. LOL
But really, this was sooo cute and fluffy and I love it! :D

Nothing's ever set in stone so things pretty much just go zig and zag in anything. In love and relationships, I think it's just best to not expect anything because getting your hopes crush is just the worst.
I really enjoyed writing this so I'm happy that people seem to enjoy it too. :D Thank you for the comment! ^^
